The population was just over 300 people. We had no airstrip, we were isolated several months of the year. I mean, you had to... in the summertime, planes would land on the water on floats, pontoons, and in the wintertime, they would land on the ice. And when the ice was freezing up they could not land. And I had always lived at home and all of a sudden as a new bride, I had to order food for a year. It was quite amazing. But the government actually had rations that you could buy, they had A, B and C rations. The A ration was sort of the top of the line ration where they actually had canned strawberries and, you know, and canned mushrooms and everything. But I used up the six cans of mushrooms in the first week that I started using them. Yeah, and you had fresh fruits and vegetables, in the summertime they would come up by ship but in the wintertime, you didn't have fresh fruits and vegetables. Though the government did give you a fresh food allowance and you could order fresh fruits and vegetables, but unfortunately, sometimes, they would get frozen when they were coming in the wintertime. But, you know, these things were so precious that, I would just thaw the grapes out slightly and eat them.
