Living sustainably, never taking too much from the land, this has been our life. Over a long time, we found ways to live in harmony, with the land and with each other. We had to do so, to survive.

There is a key concept I want to share with you: Nalunaijainiq. Can you say it? Na-lu-nai-jai-niq. Try to say it again. Nalunaijainiq.

Nalunaijainiq means the following:

  • Misunderstandings can be solved by talking, and listening to one another.
  • Hurt can be healed.
  • Wrong can be righted.
  • ...most of the time.

Traditionally, we used Nalunaijainiq to identify the problem and find the right solution.

Nalunaijainiq. This ancient way of problem-solving and resolving conflict is being incorporated into government procedures in Nunavut. It can be used in schools, in the workplace, and at home.

It's no big secret and we're openly talking about Nalunaijainiq. The key is to listening...and learning. And making the time to do so. I'm so glad you're here with me and with the Elders on our voyage. You've been listening well, and discovering a lot.

We can also try to communicate our needs. Is there something you've been waiting for an opportunity to communicate to someone?

You can be a master of Nalunaijainiq. Ajunngittutit. You can do it!
